One of the ancient capital cities of Sri Lanka and almost 1000 years old, Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka was a thriving religious and commercial city in its heyday. The Kingdom reached its zenith under the rule of King Parakramabahu the Great who planned the entire city meticulously, erected temples and monuments and did much for the development of this great city of old. Such glories of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka are apparent even from the ruins of today which are perhaps in better repair than those of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.

Today, Polonnaruwa is by no means the bustling hive of activity it used to be many centuries ago, but it certainly does attract many visitors especially due to the ancient ruins and its close proximity to several national parks.

Polonnaruwa weather is usually dry, even though it can be a little chilly during the months of December and January.
